Surgical

Complete care for your skin

Our approach

Our board-certified, fellowship-trained, and experienced dermatologic surgeons treat benign, malignant, and aesthetic skin conditions using current, effective, and evidence-based treatments and techniques.

Our goal is to educate our patients and to help guide them to make surgical decisions based on medical necessity and   treat only what is medically necessary or what is concerning to our patients and/or their referring healthcare provider. We make surgical treatment recommendations based on consensus guidelines from the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS), American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS), and National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN).

Prior to surgery, we thoroughly review our patients' surgical skin condition and allow as much time as needed for preoperative surgical consultation and discussion. Each surgical procedure is meticulously planned with our patients and treatment plan, expected outcomes, and treatment follow-up are discussed preoperatively in detail. Surgical wound care instructions are provided and our providers and clinical staff are available before, during, and after surgical procedures if any questions or concerns arise.

Before your surgery

Before your surgery, we recommend preparing with a few simple steps:

  • Prepare your wound care supplies. They are available to view, download, or purchase on our Supplies section.‍
  • Arrange transportation to and from your appointment if needed
  • Bring a companion to offer support and assistance if needed
  • Shower and wash your hair with your normal soap and shampoo on the morning of surgery
  • Have a normal breakfast
  • Bring a list of your current medications
  • Take all of your current medications as directed unless instructed otherwise by your prescribing healthcare provider
  • We typically do not recommend exercise or travel for at least 7 to 14 days after your surgery, but there are exceptions and please discuss your exercise routine and travel plans with your provider before your scheduled surgery day

After your surgery

After your surgery, we recommend following these tips to optimize your surgery outcome:

  • Prepare your wound care supplies. They are available to view, download, or purchase on our Supplies section
  • Carefully read the wound care instructions provided to you at your visit. They are available to view or download on our Wound Care section
  • We typically recommend leaving your initial bandage in place for 48 hours after your surgery
  • You can take showers with your initial bandage and we will provide instructions regarding how to keep your bandage dry and can provide a "waterproof" bandage
  • Once you remove your initial bandage, we recommend following the wound care instructions provided to you at your visit
  • Continue your wound care as directed until your follow-up appointment, suture removal (usually 7 to 14 days after your surgery day), or as instructed by your provider
  • Do not let your surgery site "breathe" because letting a wound dry will result in slower healing and greater scarring
  • Do not shave over your surgery site until directed
  • Do not apply make-up to your surgery site until directed
  • For surgery site discomfort, we recommend over-the-counter acetaminophen (Tylenol) and/or ibuprofen (Motrin) as directed and if tolerated and not contraindicated
  • For bruising around your surgery site, we recommend over-the-counter topical arnica gel (Arnicare) and/or oral bromelain supplement (Bromelain) as directed and if tolerated and not contraindicated and/or drink a cup of pineapple juice daily if tolerated and preferred
  • We typically do not recommend exercise or travel for at least 7 to 14 days after your surgery, but there are exceptions and please discuss your exercise routine and travel plans with your provider before your scheduled surgery day
  • Minimize sun exposure on your surgery site and and wear SPF 30 or greater zinc or titanium containing sunblock with UVA/UVB protection for at least 1 month after your surgery
  • If you have any questions or concerns  before or after your surgery day, please contact you provider at the office at (571) 529-5600 or info@aestheticdermandmohs.com
